Singapore Electricity Roundtable 2011 - Speakers Profile

Carl Hansen, Chief Executive, Electricity Authority, New Zealand

Before being appointed inaugural Chief Executive of the Electricity Authority, Carl was extensively involved in the evolution of the New Zealand electricity market, as a senior executive and director, independent advisor and economist. This background includes chairing several sector technical and advisory groups and acting as principal advisor to a number of industry bodies.

For most of the past decade, Carl has been part of the market services company M-co, originally as Chief Economist and most recently as Chief Executive. Carl also worked for the Law and Economics Consulting Group where he provided strategic and regulatory advice to utility and infrastructure clients. 

Prior roles span a wide range of policy development and operations at the New Zealand Treasury and Reserve Bank, and undertaking policy analysis at the Business Roundtable.

Peter Geers, Senior Manager Market Convergence, Australian Energy Market Operator Ltd

Peter is the Senior Manager Market Convergence with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). He has a broad role, including responsibility for developing AEMO’s five year strategic plan, business development and the integration of gas and electricity markets. Previously, Peter led the market design and legal teams for the development and implementation of the Sydney and Adelaide wholesale gas Short Term Trading Market (STTM). The market was successfully implemented in 2010.      

Prior to his role at AEMO, Peter held positions as Manager, Gas Strategy at AGL, Electricity Trading Manager and Structured Deal Manager at TXU Australia. Before joining the energy industry, Peter was a commodities trader with Sumitomo Australia in grain and food stuffs.  

Dr Selena Ng, Regional Director, South-East Asia and Oceania, AREVA

Dr Selena Ng is currently responsible for developing AREVA’s nuclear activities in South-East Asia and Oceania.  She has been based in Singapore since late 2010.  Prior to returning to Australia in 2007 where she focused on the group’s uranium activities, she spent a number of years at AREVA’s headquarters in Paris, dealing with the recycling of used nuclear fuel and waste management, and issues such as nuclear non-proliferation, topics on which she has coauthored and presented papers at various international forums.  She holds a first class honours degree in science from Monash University, a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Cambridge, and an MBA from the Collège des Ingénieurs.

Kjell Asserlind, Vice President International Energy Sales

Mr. Kjell Asserlind has been with NASDAQ OMX since 2001 and is holding the position of Vice President International Energy Sales. He has since the start been working with emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Europe. Mr. Asserlind was one of the key contributors in NASDAQ OMX’s success in providing the Trading and Clearing system to INDIAN ENERGY EXCHANGE (IEX), to OPCOM – the Romanian Power Market Operator, and to Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). He has also been key in the consortium delivering the Services and Systems for the UK Power Wholesale Market - N2EX.

Prior to NASDAQ OMX, Kjell has held positions such as Managing Director for a Software Consulting Company, and Sales Manager with Silicon Graphics and Sun Micro Systems.  In these companies, Energy companies have been a big part of his customers.

Dallon Kay, Managing Director, Diamond Energy Group

Dallon is Managing Director of the Diamond Energy Group and is based in Singapore.  Diamond Energy is the first Wholesale Trader in the National Electricity Market of Singapore and has been trading Interruptible Load, a form of Demand Response since 2006.

Diamond Energy is participating in the Energy Market Authority’s Intelligent Energy Systems Pilot Project, as a member of the Industry Working Group and is a participant in the joint Energy Market Authority and Land Transport Authority Electric Vehicle Test Bedding Project.        

Dallon is the founder of the Singapore Industrial Energy Consumers group which was formed in 2007 with the objective of advancing embedded generation policy for combined heat and power energy efficiency investments in Singapore.

His previous roles in the region include Director Commercial Development Asia for Duke Energy and Director Power Markets and Regulatory Strategy Asia for Chevron.  

Dallon has been a member of the Rules Change Panel for the National Electricity Market of Singapore since 2006.
